Marsha Belcher Schaeffer was born in Massachusetts attending public schools in Foxboro and graduating from Somerset High School. She attended Newton College of the Sacred Heart and Stonehill College. In 1973 while working in Greece, she met her husband, Val, who was chartering his 80 foot sailboat 'Camalot'; in Yugoslavia, Greece and Turkey. They left the Mediterranean in 1975 to world cruise. Highlights of their circumnavigation included the Sail Training Association's entry in the 1976 Tall Ships race from Bermuda to Newport, RI and Parade of Sail in NY Harbor. In 1978 National Geographic TV chartered 'Camalot'; for seven weeks to film the documentary starring Bob Ballard, 'Dive to the Edge of Creation'; about the discovery of the thermal vents on the ocean floor at the Galapagos Rift. For twenty-nine years they circumnavigated until 'Camalot'; was sold in key West in 2002.
